Carta al Superintendente y Mesa Directiva

Febrero 4. 2024 


Estimada Superintendente Huffman y miembros de la Mesa Directiva del Distrito Escolar de Sausalito Marin City,


Esperamos que al recibo de esta carta se encuentren bien. Las decisiones presupuestarias que se avecinan son indudablemente difíciles, y escribimos para abogar por los estudiantes del 94965. Después de observar dos reuniones del Comité Asesor de Presupuesto, estamos profundamente preocupados de que las únicas reducciones de costos específicas identificadas hasta la fecha sean en roles enfocados en los estudiantes.


Nuestros líderes y educadores nos han dicho que nuestros estudiantes necesitan más intervenciones de maestros, entrenadores de éxito estudiantil, especialistas en lectura, etcétera. Sin embargo, las reuniones del Comité Asesor de Presupuesto se han centrado en revisar un modelo de reducción  para la instrucción y entrenadores de éxito estudiantil que maximiza el tamaño de las aulas. Nuestra solicitud es poner a los estudiantes primero: cambiando el enfoque hacia la implementación del presupuesto mínimo necesario para la oficina del distrito, instalaciones y otros costos generales.


Para avanzar en esta dirección, solicitamos que el Distrito presente un plan para reducir los costos administrativos en al menos $1M antes de avanzar con cualquier plan que pertenezca a roles enfocados en los estudiantes. Aunque no estamos determinando reducciones específicas, creemos que hay una serie de acciones que el Distrito necesita considerar seriamente para alcanzar este objetivo de más de $1M, incluyendo:


  • Implementar un modelo de una sola escuela (un plantel), debido los altos costos administrativos requeridos para mantener un pequeño campus de 6-8, así como los beneficios académicos de un campus de TK-8. Aunque la situación de las instalaciones es compleja, hay varios escenarios que merecen consideración. Consolidar en una única escuela tiene el potencial de optimizar los recursos administrativos, reducir los costos generales, generar ingresos por arrendamiento que ayudarían a reforzar el presupuesto; y crear un ambiente de aprendizaje más eficiente y unificado. Un modelo escolar unificado podría llevar a una mejor colaboración entre maestros, un aumento en los recursos compartidos, retener a las familias y un sentido de comunidad más fuerte entre estudiantes, padres y educadores. En adición, hay varias organizaciones locales al servicio de nuestros estudiantes y de la comunidad que serían inquilinos ideales para cualquier espacio que se abra.


  • Reducir o redefinir los roles de la oficina del distrito (lo que podría incluir tecnología informática (IT), Mantenimiento y otras funciones). Esto podría lograrse cubriendo las responsabilidades con enlaces de maestros, roles de gerente/coordinador o servicios de soporte en guardia (on-call).


  • Hacer reducciones razonables al presupuesto de la cafetería, reconociendo que esto es más fácil de lograr bajo un modelo de un solo plantel escolar.


  • Recortar los gastos de consultores, abogados y otros servicios y renegociar los términos del contratos.


  • Reducir los gastos de viajes y conferencias.


Todos los recortes son lamentables y nos duele ver al distrito en éste estado. No obstante, creemos que éste enfoque puede fortalecer la integridad educativa de nuestro Distrito.
